Does your Desktop resolution affect performance in games?

I suppose it could, smaller desktop resolution = smaller game resolution = ****** graphics

im at 1680x1040 my theory is if you lower desktop res you can up the game res ? Again it's my theory .

Yes it does i suggest you put your res at the actual size your monitor supports. If you lower your res your game will run better if you have lag problems.
